The Second Life Language

Second Life Jargon

Greetings! Second Life can be pretty complicated, but worse is the slang/jargon used by the SL community. For a newbie, this can get pretty frustrating. I’m here to put some clarity on this matter. You will eventually learn the terms the longer you play...but I shall use a very intelligent quote here “Ain’t no one got time for that!”

SL- Second Life
MP- The second life market place.
Avi- Avatar
Sim- An area in Second Life e.g freebie island (Simulated area)
TP- Teleport (Tp me to your house)
Skin- Avatar skin which is made up of your face, muscle lines, etc.
Shape- Avatar shape, this is how your body looks (defined, slim, fat, muscular, etc.)
BL- Blood Lines
Noob/Newbie- New player

Bloodlines terms

Vamp- Vampire
Lycan- werewolf/lycanthrope
Lumens- Lycan food
Tank- A tank that holds a certain amount of litres of blood/lumens
Freshie- An Avatar that has never been bitten or scratched before
Family- Bloodlines clan
Clan land- A sim owned by a bloodlines clan

That’s all I can think of at the moment. As I remember them, I will add new ones to this post. Or, you can just comment with your own ones and I will add them.

Decorating second Life

MOVING AND ROTATING OBJECTS IN SECOND LIFE

Decorating your own space can be a pain in Second Life. If you don’t know how to do it, you can easily become frustrated. In this post, I will guide you on how to rotate and move objects, while placing them neatly and realistically.
First, let’s get familiar with how to move and rotate objects. Right click on your object and choose to “edit”. On the edit window there will be check boxes with words like “Rotate” or “Move”. Those ones are the most important at the moment. To Move an object, check the “Move” Box and the object will now have different colour
Moving an object
arrows around it. The blue, vertical, arrow will move the object up or down. The red arrow will move the object sideways, I.E to the left or right. The green arrow will push the object frontward or backward. When moving the object, left click on the arrow and hold the button while moving the mouse. Let go of the button when you have placed the object as desired.
To rotate the object, check the box that says “Rotate”. A circular ball will now appear on the object. Around the ball, will be different color lines. The green line with rotate the object vertically, or to make it face up, down, or upside down. The blue line, will make the object face left, right, or behind. The red line will rotate the object’s sides. E.g if you move the red line to the left, the object rotates at a left angle.
Utilizing this function properly, is KEY to decorating your space in second Life. Many a noob will learn how to move and rotate objects, but they will mess it up. E.g if you want to place a house on your land, you might not move it down enough, and it will look like it is floating on air.
Basic rules for decorating:
secondlife
Rotating and moving an object
-          Move the object up and down until it is sitting perfectly over the surface. You don’t want to put it down too much so that it looks like it is sinking into the floor nor do you want to place it so that it looks like it’s floating.
-          Push an object front and back until you have it where you need it to be. You don’t want to push so far back that it sinks into the wall.
-          Rotate objects in such a way so that the object is straight up and not slanting in any direction.
This can get pretty frustrating at first, but eventually you will get used to it.
You can also use this method on finger rings. When you wear a ring, it will sometimes look like it is not around the finger or that it’s sinking through the skin. Just move and rotate it so that it fits perfectly around the finger.
I hope that this post cleared up any problems you were having with decorating. If you have any questions then just comment and I will get back to you.

Driving and vehicles in Second Life

Driving and Vehicles in Second Life

Ready to live the fast life? Ready to show off your awesome exotic car? Ready to travel the untamed desert in a dune buggy? Then let’s get to it!
With all the awesome things to do in second life, cruising the world in a cool vehicle is one of my favorites. I’ve flown around on a helicopter, driven the hottest cars, was speeding on a Harley Davidson, and even went deep sea fishing on a yacht. The feeling of riding in a vehicle feels liberating some how.
How does one ride a vehicle? It’s simple. Just right click on the vehicle and choose to “sit”. Once you are seated, simply move around like you normally do. Navigating a vehicle is a bit more difficult than navigating your avatar. With practice however, you will get it right eventually.
What’s the down side of driving vehicles in Second Life? There is only one that I can think of. It is one but it is the most annoying. If you buy a vehicle, the odds are that you will not be able to drive it on most sims. The vehicle needs to be rezzed in order for you to use it. Most sims don’t allow the rezzing of objects…Bastards :’(

The first time I played SL, I visited a sim called “London City” it was a great replica of the original city in the U.K. Now this sim had a lot of roads so I assumed that you could drive a car on them. However, that sim doesn’t allow rezzing either. I soon found out that only a handful of sims allow you to rezz objects. These sims are hardly the place to go racing :’(
The best place to go, or so I was told, was a large sandbox. It was good for a while before I started to get bored of the scenery. I then found out that there were sims dedicated to racing. You could rezz your car and go up against other people. Another thing I found out was that even though most sims don’t allow ress, they already have vehicles rezzed for you to use for freeeeee.
Most SL users hardly find enjoyment in using vehicles. It might just be me because I’m a car nut xD
I conclude by saying:
Vehicles are awesome
Be safe
And don’t drink and drive…seriously!
