Groups and notecards in Second Life

Groups and note cards in Second Life

Groups and note cards make up a large part of the SL social aspect. I will explain each one in-depth so that you understand why it is so important.
First i’ll start with the notecard:

A note card is a text box which can be used to write very long text messages. When you receive a note card, it automatically goes into your “Note card” folder in your inventory. Some ways to receive a note card is when someone sends it to you via IM (Instant message), or by touching an object (usually gives information about the object), you also receive note cards in the folders of the items that you buy. These note cards usually consist of info about the product, disclaimer, etc., etc. In order to use note cards effectively you will need to understand that note cards are like e-mails in sl. You can send someone a note card and it gets saved in their inventory so that they can look at it whenever they please.

When applying for a job in SL, you would need to fill out an application form, which is a note card, then save it and send to the employer.
To create a note card, simply open your inventory and right-click. Select “New notecard” and you’re good to go. Alternatively, you can press the “+” button at the bottom of your inventory window and choose “New Note card”.

Lastly, on the matter of note cards, I’ll discuss how to attach inventory items onto the notecard. Create a new note card; drag the object from your inventory onto the notecard. The object shows as a hyper link on the note card. Click on the link to receive the item; if someone has sent you an item this way. If you have a problem attaching an object to a notecard, then the odds are that the object is not copy able/transferable. Make sure that the object has the permission before you attempt to embed it into a note card.

Groups:
Groups are an integral part of the Second Life social aspect. Keep group members informed about the latest news, advertise your products or services to group members, open up a group chat, and keep track of all your members. There are a few ways to use the group function effectively.
-for clubs: Send notices to all your group members about a certain dj at a certain time. Or about themed events, etc.
-For businesses: Advertise your products or services to your group members.
-for customer support- group members can voice concerns on group chat, so that you can immediately see to their query.
-For private groups: For people who just want a group for family and friends. Chat on group chat, send notices of parties or events, keep track of all group members.

How to create a group:

Second Life group interface
Group Interface

-First of all, it costs #L100 to create a group.
-If you have less than 2 members after 48 hours, then the group is automatically disbanded.
-Go to your social tab and find “My groups”
-press the “+” button and choose “New group”
-Type a name for your group
-Write a description of the group
-To have an open group (everyone is free to join), then choose “anyone can join” option. If you want a private group then leave the option blank.
-If you choose to have people pay to join your group, then select “cost to join” and put in an amount of lindens that people need to pay.
-Select the maturity rating (General, Moderate, and Adult)
-Confirm.

Creating roles:
You might have noticed that when you are a part of a group, you will have a tag above your name E.G “Night Rider”. This tag is actually the role you have in the group. For example, if your group name is “The soldiers” then your role might be “Major”. Most of the time, the role is just a fancy tag above your name. The only roles that actually mean something is the owner and anyone he/she chooses to have the power to kick members, ban, write notices, invite other members, or edit the group in anyway.
My last note on groups, is groups and land permission. When you have a piece of land, all permissions belong to you. No one else has the authority to make decisions on your land...besides the owner of the sim. However, you can allow other people to have permissions on your land. Simply create a group.
-Right click on the land and choose “About land”
In the general tab, click “set” and choose the specific group
-          Select “allow deed to group” then “owner makes contribution with deed”
-          Click deed

Group members will only have permissions if they have that specific group active. To activate a group, click your social tab, go to “My groups” right click the desired group, and then click activate.
Hope this was informative and helpful.
